Cedaredge's softball team found last week's diamond opponents to be stout competitors with the Bruins falling 11-1 in Meeker on Sept. 4 and splitting a doubleheader with Cortez at the Field of Dreams Sept. 8, losing the opener 11-8 and claiming a 10-9 win in game two.
In game one Cortez jumped out to an early 9-2 lead but had to hold on for an 11-8 win. Game two was closer with the Bruins pulling off the 10-9 victory to split the doubleheader.
No game stats were available but Cedaredge coach Terry Montoya offered some insight on the two games.
"Meeker is a good team. They play good defense and their pitchers dictate at-bats. They are solid offensively. We have to play our best against teams like that and not make little mistakes. Unfortunately, we did not play our best and the score showed that."
After coming back against Cortez in the later innings last Saturday in game one, the Bruins made the Panthers regroup in the later stages to preserve the 11-8 win.
Game two showed improvements. "We are getting better every time we get on the field and we are realizing that we need to take care of the little things. I'm proud of how they (team players) continue to show up with great attitude and work every day. We will get there," quoted Montoya.
Cedaredge will play Faith Christian on Sept. 15 and then face Basalt later in the day. Both contests are slated to be played in Basalt.
