Cedaredge High School senior Jazmyn Ince (11) eases into second base on a steal attempt against Cortez High School in the first game of a doubleheader played on the Field of Dreams at Orchard City Park on Saturday, Sept. 12. Cedaredge won the first game, 15-14, and lost the second, 12-3.

A scheduled doubleheader softball game with Aspen’s Skiers on Sept. 8 was rescheduled for Sept. 24 when inclement weather forced games to be postponed. Cedaredge was able to complete the remainder of its scheduled games last week with a contest being played in Gypsum against Eagle Valley (Sept. 10) and a doubleheader between the Bruins and Cortez on Saturday, Sept. 12. Cedaredge won its game against Eagle Valley (15-10) and split with Cortez with a 15-14 win in game one and a 12-3 loss in game two.

Cedaredge racked up 17 hits against Eagle Valley on Thursday with junior Lauren Pierce’s four hits and three RBIs leading the way in a Bruins’ 15-10 win. Pierce had four hits in four at bats and scored three runs for the Bruins in the win. Senior Brooke Claridge also drove in three runs with her 2-5 performance at the plate with two doubles to her credit.

Senior Candace Siebler and junior Larissa Cotten had three-hit days for the Bruins with Siebler hitting a double and a home run in the win. Cotten contributed a double to the 17-hit attack. Junior Kayla Davis also had two doubles in the game for the Bruins.

Cedaredge swiped 18 bases in 18 attempts against the Devils. Cotten had five steals while seniors Jazmyn Ince and Taneal Mautz added three each.

Siebler had the bulk of work in the circle for the Bruins with 104 pitches in five innings of work where she gave up 10 hits and eight runs while striking out three batters. Senior Mckayla Meyers pitched two innings and gave up two runs and struck out eight.

Against Cedaredge on Saturday the Bruins built a 6-1 lead early and then held on as the visiting Panthers from Cortez fought back to put a scare into Bruins fans in a narrow 15-14 win for Cedaredge.

Game two was all Cortez as the Panthers scratched out a 12-3 decision to earn a split with the Bruins in doubleheader play. No details were available for these games.

With the week’s play, Cedaredge dropped to 4-3 in the Western Slope League and has a 6-4 mark overall for 2020. Basalt leads the league (6-1 and 6-4) with Delta sitting in second place (3-1 and 3-2), Cortez in third (5-3 and 8-3), Cedaredge is fourth, Meeker fifth (4-4 and 5-7), Gunnision sixth (1-6 and 2-7) and Aspen is 0-5 and 0-6 to rest in the cellar.

Cedaredge played in Delta on Sept. 15 and will resume play on Tuesday (Sept. 22) with Gunnison playing in Orchard City (Field of Dreams) at 3 p.m.
