Cedaredge High School's basketball teams were in New Castle last weekend for 3A WSL play. The Bruin girls eased their way to a four-point lead at halftime and had enough offense in the second half to score a 58-49 win to move to 3-2 in the 3A WSL and 11-4 overall.

Coal Ridge slipped to 3-3 and 9-6 following the conference loss to the Bruins.

In boys action the Bruins stumbled with a poor offensive effort to fall, 70-35, to the Titans.

Cedaredge Girls

Bruins 58, Titans 49

Cedaredge and Coal Ridge were nip and tuck through the first quarter with the Bruins coming away with a 12-11 lead.

Junior Makayla Kehmeier scored six of her 11 game points in the second quarter to help the Bruins outscore Coal Ridge 14-11 in the period.

Cedaredge could not pull away in the second half but played evenly with the Titans to win the half, 32-27, and make the final score 58-49.

Senior Courtney Freeman limbered up her shooting arm and zeroed in for 18 points to lead the Bruins and Titans in scoring. Freeman hit four 3-pointers in the game and went six-for-six at the foul line in the fourth quarter on her way to the 18 point night. Sophomore Kammie Henderson, back from a bout with mononucleosis, chipped in 15 points to help bolster the Bruin offense and ignited Cedaredge's win.

Taylor Wiescamp scored 16 points for Coal Ridge and Alyssa Wenzel finished with nine.

Cedaredge Boys

Titans 70, Bruins 35

Coal Ridge (3-3 and 12-3) was fighting to stay in the hunt for post-season play and demonstrated that ambition with a 37-19 first half against the Bruins.

The Titans used more stout defense and a 33-16 second half to race past Cedaredge, 70-35, when the final buzzer had sounded.

Sophomores Colby Rupp and Conner Brooks led Cedaredge's offense with nine points each with Jacob Brown chipping in six points and senior Jared Reynolds adding six more points along with his three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Senior Owen Craig contributed five rebounds and sophomore Alex Barron had five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Coal Ridge's Austin Gerber tossed in 29 points to lead the Titan's offense with Kevin DiMarco adding another 10 in a losing cause.
