Cedaredge High School competed in four dual matches this past week and won three of them. The Bruins’ only loss was to 4A Palisade, 43-34, in quad competition in Cedaredge Friday, Feb. 12. Cedaredge’s wins came against Hotchkiss (69-9), Buena Vista (42-25) and Meeker high schools (42-37).
Cedaredge’s win over Hotchkiss included six forfeits. Competition began in the 220-pound class with forfeits coming at 106 (Tayton Nelson), 120 (Nathan Black), 132 (Lucas Hoerr), 145 (Adrian Nieto), 152 (Sam Campbell) and 195 (Gerard Sommers).
The Bruins were winners at 220 (Christopher Alejandre — 3-0 decision over Sam Ware), 113 (Landon Martin by fall over Anthony Scanlon), 126 (Trey Geyer by fall over Robert Cochran), 138 (AJ Robidoux by fall over Kaiden Caudle), 170 (Ty Walck by fall over Justin Mattison) and 195 (Jory Hoerr by fall over Josiah Peters).
Hotchkiss’ Traycer Hall defeated Kole Hawkins in the 160-pound class with a pinfall and Christian Matus won the 285-pound bout on a sudden victory period by a 3-1 score over Derek Sanchez to record Hotchkiss’ 9 points.
In an extra 285-pound match, the Bulldogs’ Dakota Shelden was a winner by pinfall over Quinnton Flores.
The Bruins’ second match of the day on Friday was against Palisade. The Bulldogs won the first three bouts by major decision, 10-2, over Nelson at 106 and by falls in the 113 and 120-pound bouts.
Geyer was the winner by pinfall at 126 with Lucas Hoerr losing by a fall at 132. Robidoux won a major decision, 11-2, in the 138-pound bout with Nieto losing a 4-2 decision at 145 and Campbell by a fall at 152.
The pinfalls continued in the 160-pound class with Hawkins the loser. Cedaredge won by pins at 170 and 182 before Palisade picked up its final pin of the match against Sommers at 195. The Bruins won the 220 and 285-pound matches by pin to make the final score 43-34.
Saturday’s triangular in Cedaredge produced two wins with the Bruins using three forfeits (145, 160 and 195) to get past Buena Vista 42-25. The Bruins earned competition wins at 126 on a 9-6 decision, pinfalls at 138 and 170, a 3-2 decision at 220 and another pinfall at 285.
Nathan Black lost a sudden victory decision, 8-6, in his 120-pound bout and Nieto lost a 2-1 decision in his 152-pound bout.
Cedaredge’s 42-37 win over Meeker began at 106 with a forfeit, with falls coming at 126, 132, 138, 145, 152 and 285. Meeker applied pressure against the Bruins with a decision at 120 and six pins at 113, 160, 170, 182, 195 and 220.
Cedaredge continues its mat wars with two competitions this week, beginning on Friday, Feb. 19, at Centauri for quad action with Crowley County, Rocky Ford and Centauri. Action begins at 12 noon. The Bruins scamper home for Saturday’s Warrior Duals in Fruita to face the Wildcats, Durango and Eagle Valley.
