The Hotchkiss High School girls basketball team pushed its season record to 3-0 with the Dec. 12 50-17 win on the road against Telluride High School’s Miners. In boys action, Eric Hollembeak’s varsity boys moved to 2-1 with a 63-58 decision over the Miners.

Hotchkiss Girls

Sophomore Lottie Hollembeak was five of 10 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, to score 12 points and lead the Hotchkiss Bulldogs to an easy 50-17 win in Telluride. The Bulldogs (3-0) had little trouble moving past the 1-2 Miners from 2A District 3. Hollembeak had scoring help from senior Elsie Vazquez who finished the game with nine points, and six points each from sophomores Araina Venjohn and Vianney Mendoza.

The Bulldogs got solid rebounding in the game with seniors Autumn Luginbyhl and Jade Miller pulling down six and five rebounds respectively, and sophomore Indigo Miller-Barnes grabbing four caroms. Senior Shay Glaser had four steals to key an aggressive Hotchkiss defense which limited the Miners to single digits in each of the four quarters.

Hotchkiss Boys

Senior Evan Mattison led Hotchkiss’ offense with 14 points and collected nine rebounds and three steals as the Bulldogs came from eight points down in the first quarter to a 30-30 tie at halftime. Hotchkiss (2-1 in 2A District 5) outscored the Miners (1-2 in 2A District 3) 33-28 in the second half to post the 2A non-conference 63-58 victory.

Mattison received scoring support from seniors Zac Ziemer (13 points) and Jacob Palecki (10 points and 10 rebounds). Senior Will Scarlett chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds while sophomore Coulson Hollembeak finished with eight points. Sophomore Blaine Peebles and juniors Oliver Mendoza and Kenny Drbohlav finished the game with three assists each for the Bulldogs.

Hotchkiss sets its sights on 1A District 1 perennial power De Beque on Wednesday, Dec. 18. There will be two varsity games only with the Bulldog girls looking to derail the 1-1 Dragons in a game beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the boys will take on another strong De Beque team, which brings a 4-0 record to town, at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs travel to Ouray on Friday, Dec. 20, to play the Trojans in games beginning at 4:30 p.m. (JV boys), 6 p.m. (varsity girls) and 7:30 p.m. (varsity boys).
