Paonia dominates play on diamond; hopes high

Hotchkiss High School moved closer to another 2A District 3/5 showdown with Paonia after a pair of wins against Dolores and Ignacio in doubleheader play in Ignacio. Hotchkiss defeated Dolores 14-0 in game one and routed Ignacio 15-0 in game two.

'Dogs 14, Dolores 4

Against Dolores, Jamison Yanish was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a sacrifice fly. Chase Hiatt had three RBIs and averaged .333. Eli Kirk was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a triple, and Presley Pene was 2 for 4 with a triple.

Jonathan Gonzalez and Kirk each had two stolen bases, and Brian Gonzalez and Hiatt each stole a base.

Pene pitched 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, walking four and striking out four.

'Dogs 15, Bobcats 0

Against Ignacio, Devin Curtis averaged 1.000 at the plate with 2 RBIs and hit his first homer of the season. Hunter Bryant, Hiatt, Jesus Macias and Marvin Geureque all batted 1.000, and Jonathan Gonzalez was 2-5 with 3 RBIs and a double.

The Bulldogs scored their 15 runs on 14 hits with no errors. They scored five runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead, 9-0. In the sixth they put six runs on the board for the win.

Jonathan Gonzalez allowed one hit and threw 14 Ks in six innings. Catcher Presley Pene had 14 putouts on 14 total chances with no errors.

Hotchkiss was 9-1 overall heading into Tuesday's make-up doubleheader at Meeker (6-3, 2-0). It hosts a DH against Rangely (1-11, 0-3) Saturday at Burns Drake Field. Game times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
