There was little doubt Logan Tullis was going to win the Class 2A 300-meter hurdles state championship once he made it through the curve.
The Cedaredge High School senior ran with the pack for Saturday's first half of the race but put away his opponents down the stretch to bring home an individual title for the Bruins at Jeffco Stadium.
“We wanted to shadow and then pass on the final stretch,” Tullis said with a slight smile. “That’s what we did. Pushed a little harder than we maybe would’ve wanted to on the first part, but it worked out pretty well.”
Tullis turned in a time of 40.19 in the finals, moving up one spot and more than one second from what he ran in the prelims, to stand atop the podium.
It wasn’t his only title, as he also took home gold in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.32 after qualifying in the top spot during prelims.
“It feels awesome,” Tullis said. “I executed on what we wanted to do, won both the races I wanted to win, then getting medals in during the relays as well was great.”
Tullis wasn’t the only champion from Cedaredge. On the girls' side, Elizabeth Brooks heaved the shot put 38 feet, 9.25 inches to secure the top spot. She also placed second in the discus with a throw of 129-7, less than two feet from the top spot. Carley Malinowski joined her on the podium with a third-place finish and a throw of 122-03.
For the runners, Kylee Terry placed second in the 100 with a time of 12.44 and was third in the 200 at 25.55.
Terry, along with Lily Sinkay, Kayla Mitchell and Hailey Hayes-Pursley finished second in the 4x200 relay, clocking in at 1:47.51.
For Delta, Esai Carrillo, though relatively new to jumping, placed second in the 3A long jump with a leap of 22-5.5, only one inch from the top spot.
The Panthers’ girls 4x200 team of Gabrielle Huggins, Kylie Huff, Aadrey Fraser and Baylee Wilson took third.
North Fork’s Hayden Moreno broke a combined Paonia/Hotchkiss record with a leap of 22-0.5 in the long jump, good enough for fifth.
