The long-awaited softball season was in jeopardy of not being played and now is through regular season play. Teams will await their fate as to playoffs when the final regular season games are played throughout the state. Cedaredge High School split its two final games with a Western Slope League win over Gunnison (Tuesday, Sept. 29), 8-7 on the Cowboys’ home field and a loss on Saturday (Oct. 3) on the campus of Colorado Mesa University to non-conference foe Palisade, 10-7.
Tuesday’s win in Gunnison was a 17-hit victory for the Bruins which included four doubles, a triple and a home run.
Cedaredge senior Jamie Meyer was a single away from the cycle after picking up her ninth double of the season to go with her second triple and second home run of the year. Meyer finished the game with four RBIs to lead Cedaredge to an 8-7 win.
Senior Candace Siebler finished the game with a double in three at bats to drive in two runs for the winners. Juniors Larissa Cotten and Lauren Pierce had two hits in the game with an RBI each for the Bruins.
Gunnison’s Anna Gallowich had three of the Cowboys’ six hits and an RBI with teammate Ariana Hernandez driving in two runs on a double in two at bats.
Cedaredge held a 3-0 lead after three innings and added two more scores in the fifth to lead 5-0. The Bruins scored three times in the top of the sixth to lead 8-0. Gunnison scored five times in the bottom of the sixth and added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to fall short in an 8-7 Cedaredge win.
On Saturday, Palisade held the Bruins scoreless for three innings while building a 9-0 lead heading to the fourth inning. Cedaredge scored four runs in the top of the fourth and Palisade tacked on its final run of the game in the bottom of the inning.
Cedaredge rallied for two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to fall short in a 10-7 loss.
Senior Jazmyn Ince and freshman Elizabeth Galley had two RBIs each for the Bruins in the loss with both players hitting home runs in the game. Jamie Meyer also had a home run for the Bruins and an RBI.
Sophomore Melissa Carroll had two hits and three RBIs with sophomore teammate Jordan Bauer driving in two runs for Palisade.
The Bruins completed the regular season with an 8-4 WSL record and 10-6 overall to finish third behind Delta (10-2, 12-4) and Basalt (8-4, 9-7). Cedaredge is ranked 12th in the RPI Poll for Class 3A while 3A WSL winner, Delta, sits in 10th place, Cortez in 16th and Basalt in 17th.
