Delta High School’s softball team exited the 2019 hunt for a team title with a 13-3 loss to Ft. Lupton High School in Region 3 play hosted by Brush. Information from the game was not available before press time. It is known that the Panthers held an early 3-0 lead on a home run by junior Keely Porter. Ft. Lupton took a lead in its half of the same inning and never looked back. The Bluedevil’s defense closed the door on Delta’s offense from that point on to record the 13-3 decision and eliminate the Panthers from postseason play.

One bright spot was senior Amanda Cotten’s 2-3 day at the plate with a single, double and a walk and a run scored.

Delta finished the season with a league record of 6-6 and was 8-15 overall.

The 2019 Class 2A State Softball Championships will feature 16 teams which made it through regional play. There were five teams from 3A District 5; Basalt, Cortez, Cedaredge, Delta and Gunnison. Three of those teams — Basalt, Cortez and Cedaredge — advanced to the next round of play. Basalt, the No. 2 team in RPI rankings, hosted Region 2 and won the title game over No. 15 Lamar, 10-4. Cortez was seeded ninth in Region 8 and defeated No. 24 St. Mary’s 10-0 before falling to Region 8 host Limon, 9-5 in the title game. Cedaredge came into regionals as the 13th seed. The Bruins breezed past No. 20 Faith Christian 20-10, but fell to Region 4 host Strasburg, 15-3, in the title game. In Region 6, Gunnison, the No. 22 seed, lost its opening round game against No. 11 The Academy, 9-8, and was eliminated. Region 6 host Eaton defeated The Academy, 14-4, to win that title. Both the regional champions and runner-ups moved on.
