Delta High School basketball teams opened 3A WSL play Jan. 17 and 18 with a road trip to Carbondale on Friday to face the 1-11 Roaring Fork Rams and a home contest with Basalt (3-4) on Saturday.
The Panther girls ran, and shot, their way to a 64-42 win in Carbondale and scored a 51-39 win against Basalt on Saturday. Delta’s boys also were successful over the weekend with a 64-43 win against Roaring Fork and a fast-paced 83-31 victory against Basalt on Saturday.
Delta (7-3) was quick to get started against Roaring Fork with senior Haylin McCulloch canning nine of her 11 points in the first quarter in an 18-7 Delta run. Senior Keely Porter took her turn with nine points in the second quarter and finished the game with a game-high 19 points. Maya Lindgren scored nine of her team-high 12 points for the Rams and Caroline Wisroth finished with 10 points in a losing cause.
Saturday’s game against Basalt’s girls was another fast start for the Panthers with junior Alexa Huff scoring at least two points in each quarter of a 21-point effort for Delta. Geddes had a steady game and finished with 15 points for the Panthers. Gracie Reardon had four 3-pointers for the Longhorns and scored nine of her 19 points in the fourth quarter to spark an 18-point quarter for Basalt.
A motivated Rams squad stayed within striking distance for most of the boys game but could not overcome a 35-25 halftime lead and fell 65-52. Senior Javi Medina floated five 3-pointers through the nets for the Panthers and finished the game with 19 points. Junior Colbi Braslin finished with 14 points with senior teammates Nate Workman and Hunter Hughes adding 10 points each in the victory. Frankie Harrington had 17 counters to lead Roaring Fork’s offensive efforts.
Delta had its best start to a game this season (and maybe longer) with a 29-point rampage in the first quarter of Saturday’s game with Basalt. Medina, Hughes and Braslin contributed eight points each in the big quarter. Game tempo for the Panthers did not diminish in the second quarter with Delta scoring 30 points and Hughes continuing his hot streak with another seven points in the quarter. Delta’s 59-19 halftime lead ensured a running clock in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers put Basalt away with a 24-point second half while their defense limited the Longhorns to just 12 points.
Delta played Montrose (11-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 21, with results forthcoming in next week’s edition of the DCI. The Panthers play host to second place Coal Ridge (7-4) on Friday, Jan. 24, with games starting at 3, 4:30, 6 and 7:30 p.m. Delta is in Palisade on Tuesday, Jan. 28, for games scheduled to begin at 2:30, 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m.
