Last week’s win in Basalt was the fifth straight for playoff bound Delta High School. The Panthers have had an exciting season where stress and close games have been the norm. Delta has played in four overtime games, three of them double overtime affairs, with last week’s regular season finale playing out to a 2-1 overtime win for the Panthers. The only loss for Delta in double overtime was a 2-1 loss to Class 3As top team Salida on Sept. 28 on a penalty kick.
Play in Basalt was a defensive stalemate for the first half with neither team finding the net for a score. A goal from each team in the second half forced an overtime before a winner could be identified. For Delta, senior Martin Corral, as in other games during the season, provided the winning goal in overtime. Corral’s first goal came in the second half and helped extend the game an extra period. Junior Sean Maulhardt and senior Jarett Hernandez passed the ball to Corral for assists. Corral is ranked fourth in goals (30), and points (66) for Class 3A. Hernandez ranks seventh in assists with 12.
The Panthers are currently ranked fifth in RPI for Class 3A with Salida sitting on top with its 13-0-1 record. League member Roaring Fork is ranked sixth and Vail Mountain is 17th.
Delta soccer coach Paul Shean didn’t have pairings for the coming weekend’s playoffs but noted soccer brackets are due to be released sometime Monday, Oct. 28. Check with chsaanow.com/rpi/boys-soccer for pairings and game times.
Shean said he believes his Panthers will be either a five- or six-seed and will host a game on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.
