With Delta’s three wins last week, the Panthers finished the regular season with the 3A Western Slope League’s best overall record (11-3) and vaulted from a non-playoff ranking to number 23 and earned a berth in the 2021 volleyball playoffs. The Panthers will travel to Cortez this weekend for Region 2 action against second seeded Cortez High School, which owns a 12-0 record. Also in the three-team mini-tournament is No. 15 Manitou Springs (9-3).
Cortez and Delta play in the tournament’s first game with the Panthers and Manitou Springs playing the second game. Cortez and Manitou Springs play the last game with the team with the most wins moving on to the state tournament.
An early season schedule included No. 6 Bayfield (9-4), 3A WSL champion Basalt (9-4) which entered the tournament as the No. 24 seed and Class 4A Montrose is No. 20 in the 4A regionals.
Last week’s win over Grand Valley was a 3-0 victory with wins of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-21. Raelee McCurdy had a strong game at the net with nine kills with Ellie Ames and Erika Kuta chipping in with five kills each and Kayla Miller recording five kills. Jillian Carlson had 23 assists for the Panthers in the win.
Thursday’s game against Roaring Fork was another 3-0 win with Kuta recording six kills followed by McCurdy and Miller’s five kills and Ames’ four kills and nine aces.
Delta ended the regular season with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-18 and 25-17) win at home against Aspen’s Skiers.
