Delta High School's Panthers defeated both Paonia and Gunnison High Schools in wrestling on Feb. 6. Delta beat Paonia in the evening's first match, 43-32, and then scored a 45-30 decision against Gunnison.
Competition began in the 220 pound weight division against Paonia where Paonia's Anthony Miller edged Delta's Gauge Lockhart, 5-4, to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. After that, Eli Miramontes scored a scored a fall over Paonia's Malachi Deck (0:48) to give Delta a lead it would not relinquish.
Delta's Trey Glover won by forfeit at 106 pounds followed by Sebastian Chavez's forfeit win at 113. Kaleb Cockroft kept the winning streak alive at 120 with a 12-7 decision over Paonia Trey Bejarano at 120. The Eagle's Ace Connolly was a winner by forfeit at 126 and Ben Koch pinned Paonia's Jason Kuntz (0:54) in the 132 pound match.
Paonia's Reagan Todd pinned Jarrin Crandall (5:03) at 138 and Timothy Horn won by forfeit at 145 for Delta. Paonia's Zeb Etter scored a technical fall (15-0, 4:00) against Clay Sandridge and Alex Abila scored a major decision (10-2) over Paonia's Shane Odom.
At 170 pounds, Paonia's Grey Neal was a winner by fall (2:58) over Jeffery Griffith and Trenton Gaston won by fall (3:20) over Delta's Colton Johnson at 182. Delta's James Goff was a winner by forfeit at 195 to end the match.
Against Gunnison, Treyton Sandoval gave Delta a 6-0 lead with a fall in the 285-pound match.
Delta's other wins against Gunnison came at 120 with Cockroft winning by forfeit; Koch won by forfeit at 132; Jarrin Crandall won by forfeit at 138; Sandridge won by decision, 10-7, at 160; Griffith won by forfeit at 170; Lockhart won by fall (1:29) at 195 and Miramontes pinned his opponent in the 220-pound match to make the final score 45-30.
