Freshman Paige Kehmeier dropped some time and the Delta High School girls cross-country team had a strong team showing against larger schools during the Warrior Lincoln Park Classic Southwestern League Championships on last Thursday.
Kehmeier turned in a time of 19 minutes, 44.50 seconds and finished 15th on the race at a golf course in downtown Grand Junction. Shayla Curtis was the Panthers’ next placer, taking 32nd with a time of 21:41.60. Kassidy Wear followed close behind in 34th and 21:56.50.
The Panthers finished eighth in the team standings.
John Dexter was the top finisher in the boys race with a time of 17:57.90. He placed 33rd in a field that included multiple teams from Class 5A and 4A. Abaro Felix followed in 66th, finishing in 19:43.50. Andrew Purvis placed 70th in 20:34.80 and Moses Huggins finished one spot behind him with a time of 21:05.60.
Meanwhile, North Fork raced at the Chris Severy Invitational in Aspen.
Alyster Birk took fourth place in the boys race with a time of 20:14.90, less than one second behind the third-place finisher. Alejandro Garcia took 24th in 22:33.80 and Hunter Thompson placed 30th in 23:02.10. Matt Delaney was 54th with a time of 24:38.20, Jose Mojarro was 56th in 24:48.60 and Milo Chavez was 57th in 24:53.80 as the boys team took third in the 10-team field.
Karlie Egging was the top girls finisher, taking 38th with a time of 27:53.40. Leah Vader took 45th in 29:26.40, while Cece Houseweart placed 60th in 31:14.90. The girls team finished eighth.
The Miners next travel to Newcastle on Oct. 22 for the Class 3A Region 1 meet to square off against Aspen, Basalt and other strong opponents.
The cross-country state championships are slated for Oct. 30 at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs.
