Hotchkiss High School began its volleyball season on shaky legs and through the first eight games find themselves near the middle of the pack in 2A/1A WSL play.

Last week’s split with West Grand and Hayden leaves the Bulldogs with a 1-1 league mark and 3-5 overall. Both games this past week were in Hotchkiss with West Grand High School (2-0, 7-1), Sept. 13, serving a 3-1 loss (25-10, 19-25, 25-17 and 25-22) to the Bulldogs. The game Sept. 14 against Hayden (0-1, 3-3) was more favorable with the home team rallying from a first set loss to a 3-1 victory, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-22.

Senior Shay Glaser and junior Amelia Hickam combined for 31 kills in the two matches with Hickam having the upper hand with 17 hits for kills. Glaser played the net for 10 blocks in Hotchkiss’ match against West Grand and Hickam with eight, Glaser with seven and senior Elsie Vazquez had five blocks against the Tigers on Saturday.

Assist leaders for the Bulldogs included sophomore Izzy Houseweart’s nine against West Grand with another 15 against Hayden on Saturday. Bella Brezonick chipped in with eight on Friday and another 10 assists on Saturday.

Serve reception leaders for the two matches included sophomore Lottie Hollembeak’s 54 on Friday and 22 on Saturday. Vazquez had 32 on Friday and 18 on Saturday. Senior Dana Kiel received 25 serves on Saturday with senior Ally Regelman receiving 15 and Glaser another 12.

Though the Bulldogs lost their Friday night match to West Grand, Hotchkiss’ head volleyball coach Peter Nethington was happy with the way his team played both nights.

“I thought we didn’t play as well tonight (against Hayden) as we did in our loss to West Grand,” Nethington said. “The good part about tonight’s win was we did play through some rough patches to get the job done.”

Hotchkiss was at Vail (Vail Mountain High School) on Sept. 17, for match play against the Gore Rangers. The Bulldogs are at home on Saturday, Sept. 21, for volleyball action beginning at 1 p.m. with c-team play and 2 p.m. for junior varsity action. Varsity teams are scheduled for 3 p.m. The following week, Tuesday, Sept. 25, the Bulldogs visit Delta High School for matches beginning at 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.
