After taking an early 4-3 lead at the end of the first inning Delta’s softball team was unable to hold the lead in a seesaw game played in Gunnison on Sept. 1. The Panthers fell behind when Gunnison took a 5-4 lead in a 2-run fourth inning.
Delta bounced back with a 3-run fifth and led 7-6 going to the sixth inning. The Panthers scored once in the sixth but lost the lead when Gunnison scored four times in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-8 lead with one inning of regulation play remaining. Delta plated two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 10-10 forcing extra innings when the Cowboys failed to score in the bottom of the seventh.
Delta took a 1-run lead in its half of the eighth inning but lost the game when the Cowboys scored twice to end the game.
Freshman Juelz Sandoval had three hits in five plate appearances to lead Delta’s hitting attack and knocked in one run.
Senior Keely Porter collected her first home run of the season and drove in three runs to lead Delta’s RBI production. Senior Shania Garcia and junior Teja Smith had two RBIs in the game with senior Keslie Sandoval recording an RBI. Garcia and Juelz Sandoval had doubles for the Panthers.
The Panthers had five batters reach base on errors and stranded 12 runners in the loss.
Delta’s loss was especially tough in that the Panthers out hit Gunnison 10-5 and lost the game due to errors with the Panthers committing seven errors to Gunnison’s six. Starting pitcher Jill Robinson, a sophomore, allowed eight runs on four hits with senior Caitlyn Carlquist allowing three runs on one hit and seven walks.
Delta was at home this week for a return game against Gunnison on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The results of that contest will be featured in the Sept. 16 edition of the Delta County Independent. The Panthers are in Meeker on Friday, Sept. 11 for doubleheader action against the Cowboys with games scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m. starts. Delta, 1-1 in the Western Slope League, and 1-2 overall, will host Cedaredge on Wednesday, Sept. 16 with varsity action set for 5 p.m. A Thursday (Sept. 17) meeting with Palisade will take place in Delta with varsity action beginning at 3 p.m.
