In its inaugural season, there are a lot of firsts for the North Fork Miners football team. But suffering the first loss as a team is one that could have waited. The Buena Vista Demons had other ideas as they remained undefeated for the 2021 season.

North Fork scored first. A 77-yard run by running back Diezel Balko to the end zone would break the 0-0 tie in the second quarter. Balko finished the night with 90 yards on the ground and the touchdown. Quarterback Drayden Taylor added another score on a 1-yard run to give the Miners a 14-0 lead heading into halftime. Taylor finished the night with nine carries for 58 yards.

The Demons would answer with a score in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter.

Down 20-14 after the Demons first touchdown in the fourth quarter, Blaine Peebles who has proven to be a special teams ace returned the ensuing kickoff 90-yards for pay dirt.

Leading 21-20 with less than six minutes in the game, the Miners couldn’t hold off Buena Vista one last time. The Demon’s scored with just over three minutes on the clock and converted a two-point conversion to take the lead at 28-21. The Miners couldn’t answer on their final possession.

Mordecai White added 68 yards on the ground on 17 carries, Peebles added another 33 yards. Taylor’s passing stats were two completions on six attempts for 55 yards and an interception. Peebles was credited with both receptions. Peebles finished the night with 213 all purpose yards.

Leading the Miners defense was Carter Neff with 14 of the team’s 72 tackles. The Miners accumulated seven tackles for a loss.

North Fork (4-1) is on the road Friday, Oct. 8, at Meeker (3-2). Meeker and North Fork are two of three undefeated teams in 1A Western Slope League play. The other is Gunnison.
