The visiting Olathe Pirates (2-1, 1-1) were out to get back on the winning side of things following their 14-12 loss to Cedaredge on Oct. 17. Olathe was able to find the right formula for the turnaround in its 48-8 win over Paonia last Friday night, Oct. 21.

No statistics were available from Olathe for last week’s win over the Eagles.

Paonia found Olathe’s defense to be formidable with just 47 passing yards on Jason Kuntz’s 5-13 attempts and one interception. Kuntz did find senior receiver Dominic Felice open on a short touchdown pass to avoid the shutout. A 2-point conversion made the final score 40-8. Sophomore Ace Connolly had one catch for 29 yards and sophomore Diego Lareau caught two passes for 13 yards.

Felice was Paonia’s leading ground gainer with 81 yards on 18 carries and sophomore Easton Tribble had nine yards on four carries and Kuntz carried the ball three times for nine yards.

Defensively, senior Noah McDaniel and sophomore Logan Farnsworth paced the Eagles with seven tackles each with Felice, junior Malachi Deck and freshman Kohen Booth recording six tackles each in the game. Farnsworth also had two interceptions in the game for Cedaredge.

Paonia (0-3, 0-2) will be looking for its first win of the season this Saturday, Oct. 31, in Gunnison with a 1 p.m. start time against the Cowboys (1-2,1-1).
