Make no mistake... the effort was there but too many mistakes were the downfall of No. 6 Delta High School’s bid to return to the Class 2A state football title game in a 7-6 loss to No. 7 Lamar in a game played in Delta Nov. 28.
Lamar’s Jesus Reyes bulled his way to, unofficially, 113 yards on 24 carries while quarterback Zane Rankin found Blake Buxton all alone in the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown strike early in the second quarter to give the Savages a 7-0 lead after Luis Dela Torre kicked the extra point.
Delta battled back for a 12-play, 80 yard touchdown drive early in the third quarter with Panther quarterback Nathan Scharnhorst sprinting to the left end zone pylon from five yards out with 8:14 left in the period. The snap for the extra point was muffed and Delta trailed 7-6, and proved to be the eventual final score in the game.
Delta, 5-2, was eliminated from the 2020 state football playoffs while Lamar moves on to face No. 5 Eaton (5-2), a 27-13 winner over previously unbeaten, and top seeded Resurrection Christian. The title game is set for Dec. 4 in Pueblo on the campus of CSU-Pueblo. Game time is 2 p.m.
