With 14 errors in two games against the 3A District 5 league leaders, Basalt High School, Delta High School’s Panthers are mired in the middle of the pack with a 5-5 league record and 7-12 overall. The lack of experience continues to be Delta’s nemesis in 2019.
Delta lost the first game of a doubleheader with Basalt, 13-8, but had a chance for more runs throughout the game. With a 5-3 lead after three innings, Delta seemed to have established rhythm in its offense. The Panthers were in the game in the late stages with an 8-5 lead heading into the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Basalt had other plans for the last two innings of the game and executed four-run innings in each of the final two frames. The eight-run explosion sealed the win with the final score, 13-8.
Senior Amanda Cotten had three hits, including a triple, and finished with two RBIs for the Panthers. Junior Jade Cockroft also had three hits, with a triple and one RBI. Sophomore Teja Smith had a double for two RBIs, and junior Keely Porter had a hit for one RBI.
Basalt’s Zoe Vozick was a one-person scoring machine for the Longhorns with three hits, including a double and a home run leading to four RBIs in the game.
Game two featured a 3-0 Delta lead going to the bottom of the third. Basalt rallied for six runs in the bottom of the inning to take a lead it would stretch into an 11-3 win.
Porter was 2-2 with a double for Delta, and Cockroft had two hits for one RBI. Smith was 1-3 and one RBI for the Panthers.
Basalt remained unbeaten in league play (12-0) and has a 20-1 overall record.
Delta hosted Gunnison (4-7, 9-10) Oct. 8, and visits Field of Dreams on Thursday, Oct. 10, to take on Cedaredge (7-4, 13-7) at 3 p.m. for the regular season finale.
