Paonia High School's girls and boys basketball teams lost varsity games in De Beque High School on Jan. 29. The girls lost their game, 43-32, and the boys fell 45-31 to the Dragons. Paonia's varsity girls played at home on Jan. 31, and came away with a 43-24 decision over Ouray's Trojans.
Paonia's girls trailed by eight at halftime, 17-25, and weren't able to keep pace in the second half as De Beque scored 18 points over the final 16 minutes while the Eagles could only come up with 15 points in the 43-32 loss on Wednesday. De Beque improved to 5-2 and 10-4 in the 2A/1A Western Slope League.
Against Ouray, Paonia's offense turned in a good first half with 27 points to take a 17-point lead at halftime. Scoring in the second half was nearly even with Paonia putting 16 points on the scoreboard and Ouray finishing the game with 14 points in the second half.
Paonia's girls improved to 2-4 and 5-8 in the 2A/1A WSL and Ouray slipped to 1-4 and 1-9 in the 2A/1A San Juan Basin standings.
In boys action, Paonia's trip to De Beque last Wednesday ended in a 45-31 loss which was fueled by a 15-4 first quarter and a 12-3 third quarter. Paonia did get its offense synchronized in the fourth quarter where the Eagles scored 21 points to cut into De Beque's big lead to make the final score 45-31.
Paonia dropped to 4-3 and 7-6 in the 2A/1A WSL with De Beque holding onto its league lead with a 7-0 and 14-0 record.
The Eagles were at Grand Valley (Parachute) on Tuesday, Feb. 4, and are scheduled to host North Park on Friday for varsity games at 5:30 (girls) and 7 p.m. (boys). The Eagles finish their week with another home game on Saturday against Soroco with varsity games scheduled for 2:30 and 4 p.m.
