Paonia High School’s girls basketball team got off to a great start in 2021 and added another victory in an undefeated season with a 38-36 win over Olathe High School in Paonia. The win is the fourth overall for the Eagles and marks the third league win.
The Paonia boys were beaten 57-28 by the Olathe Pirates and have yet to win a game in four tries with an 0-3 mark in league play. Senior Dominic Felice scored 12 points for the Eagles.
Paonia’s girls had a strong start against the Pirates and ran to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter and were leading 26-12 at halftime.
Someone let the air out of the ball in the third quarter as the Eagles were stymied on offense and scored just two points while Olathe countered with nine points to trim Paonia’s lead to 28-21 with eight minutes left in the game.
Paonia’s 7-point lead was in jeopardy with the Pirates scoring 15 points in the final stanza and the Eagles hanging on to a two-point lead with 10 points and a final score of 38-36.
Sophomore Payton Fister finished the game with 16 points to lead all scorers in the game with sophomore Leia Ellenberger scoring nine points. Olathe senior Annie Bollinger was the Pirates’ leading scorer with 10 points with senior Mariah Garcia finishing with nine points and junior Makayla Millsap scoring eight points.
