The basketball fortunes for the Paonia High School girls team continues with more losses against Plateau Valley, 43-31, on Jan. 23, and a 40-30 loss in Meeker on Jan. 25. Paonia’s boys used a strong second half against Plateau Valley on Friday to tie the game at 48-48 to force an overtime. The Eagles scored 12 points in the overtime period to win the game 60-55. On Saturday, Paonia couldn’t keep up with Meeker’s Cowboys in a 59-50 loss.
In Paonia’s overtime win against Plateau Valley, senior Kyle Long pumped in 22 points, including eight of nine free throws, and six of 12 overtime points. Long received help in the scoring department with 11 points each from Jai Petmezas and Logan Green. Green also held a hot hand in the overtime period with five points. Austyn Vig had 16 points and David Crowhurst scored 15 for Plateau Valley in the loss.
Against Meeker, the Eagles were outscored 17-8 in the second period of this game and simply were unable to overcome the difference the rest of the way in a 59-50 loss.
Paonia’s basketball schedule has the Eagles in De Beque on Wednesday, Jan. 29, for varsity games at 5:30 and 7 p.m. and shows Ouray in Paonia on Friday, Jan. 31 for a boys junior varsity game at 4 p.m. and a girls varsity game at 5:30 p.m. Paonia is in Parachute on Tuesday, Feb. 4, for JV games at 4 p.m. (both girls and boys) with the girls varsity game set for 5:30 p.m. and boys varsity at 7 p.m.
