Paonia girls win Frank Woodburn track meet

Photo by Wayne Crick Paonia's Emily Pieper hits the takeoff board about as good as can be expected during long jump competition on Saturday at the Frank Woodburn track meet at Stocker Stadium. Pieper won the event with a leap of 15-8.25.

Despite missing its junior teammates due to state testing, the Paonia girls track team scored 111 points to win the 15-team Frank Woodburn Track Meet in Grand Junction Saturday.

Senior Sophia Anderson won two individual events. Her winning time of 26 seconds flat in the 200-meter dash broke the 2015 school record of 26.14 set by Marisa Edmondson. Anderson also won the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, three-quarter inches.

Brianna Van Vleet won the 400-meter dash in 58.89 (pushing sister Ashley's 2013 school record of 58.23), and took silver in the 200m with a time of 26.43.

In the 300m hurdles Lyla Hayutin-Baril finished fourth in 54.80 and McKenna Palmer was fifth with a time of 55:44.

In other individual events, Palmer placed third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.48 and fifth in triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 1 inch.

Katya Schwieterman finished second in the 3200m run, and Poppy Lightfoot placed third in the 800m run with a time of 2:45.34.

Emily Pieper won the long jump at 15-08.25 feet, and McKenna Palmer placed fourth in the long jump with a personal best mark of 14-10.75. In shot put Sabrina Leighton was sixth with a throw of 31 feet, 6 inches.

The 800m medley relay took second with a time of 1:58.97, and the 4x100 also took second (53.58).

Several athletes competed at the Cardinal Open at Grand Valley meet on April 5, where the girls placed second with 75 points.

Brooke Hillman won silver in the 400m with a time of 1:06.11, and Lightfoot took third with a time of 1:06.83. Palmer placed in three events, taking second in the 100m hurdles, fifth in the 300m hurdles in 55.09, and fourth in long jump at 14-06.5.

Lyla Hayutin-Baril placed seventh in 300m hurdles, and fourth in long jump; Taralee Maurz placed eighth in long jump. And in the 100m dash Emily Miller placed seventh.

In throwing events, Leighton placed fourth in discus with a throw of 81 feet, 2 inches; and third in the shot put with a mark of 32-06.75.

In relays Paonia took first in the 4x800 (10:57.73), and second in the 4x100 (54.88) and 4x400 (4:38.25).
