The Paonia High School Eagles were busy with seven duals in two separate events over the weekend. Paonia was at West Grand for duals against the Mustangs and Hayden’s Tigers on Friday, Feb. 5, with a win against West Grand (48-12) and a loss to Hayden (48-24). The Eagles hosted competition in five duals on Saturday, including Center (W, 36-12), Montrose (L, 68-8), Sierra Grande/Centennial (T, 6-6), North Park (W, 30-0) and Soroco (W, 24-12).
Beginning with West Grand on Friday, Feb. 5, Paonia’s losses came at 120 on a forfeit and 126 with Jason Kuntz losing by pinfall. There were four double faults in the match, 106, 113, 160, and 285. The Eagles’ wins in actual bouts came at 132, Ace Connolly win by pinfall, at 138, Logan Farnsworth win by pinfall, and Trenton Gaston at 182 with a pinfall. Forfeit wins for Paonia were at 145, Reagan Todd; 152, Dawson Morgan; 170, Kohen Booth; 192, Malachi Deck and 220, Anthony Miller.
Hayden’s win over Paonia was due largely in part to forfeits, with half of the 48 points scored coming in forfeits at 113, 120, 126 and 132. Paonia had one win by way of an actual match on Morgan’s pinfall win in the 160-pound class. The other Eagles’ points were awarded on forfeits at 152, Todd; 182, Gaston; and 22, Miller.
The Tigers’ won points for matches won at 106 on Noah Valdez’s loss by pinfall, 126 on Jason Kuntz’s loss by pinfall, 138 on Connolly’s 4-0 decision loss, 145 on Farnsworth’s pinfall loss, 170 on Booth’s pinfall loss and 195 on Deck’s 6-5 decision loss.
In Saturday’s dual against Center, the Eagles won three matches by pinfall at 160 (Morgan), 182 (Gaston) and 195 (Deck). Paonia claimed forfeit wins in five weights, 113 (Payton Fister), 126 (Kuntz), 132 (Connolly), 145 (Todd) and 170 (Booth).
There were four double forfeits in the match including 120, 138, 152 and 220 with Center winning one bout by Chavez’s pinfall loss in the 106-pound weight class and one forfeit at 285.
Paonia’s match with Montrose ended in a 68-8 loss for the Eagles. Connolly won his 132-pound weight match by technical fall, 16-0 and Morgan won a 6-2 decision at 152 pounds to record Paonia’s only points in the dual.
Montrose won pinfalls in six weight classes; 106, Cooper Brady over Valdez; 113, Adriel Martinez over Fister; 170, Dontea Pearce over Booth; 182, Isaiah Alcazar over Gaston; 195, Raul Martinez over Deck; and 220, Dmarion Lopez over Miller. Kamron Alegria won a technical fall (20-3) over Kuntz, and the Indians had forfeit wins at 120 (Justin Langford), 145 (Joshua Simpson), 160 (Micah Simpson) and 285 (Colten Brueggeman).
There were only two matches between Paonia and Sierra Grande/Centennial. Farnsworth lost by pinfall in the 138-pound class and Miller won his 220-pound bout by pinfall to make a final score of 6-6. All the remaining 12 weights were double forfeits.
The Eagles scored a 30-0 win against North Park with a handful of bouts creating all the points by either forfeits or competitions by opposing wrestlers. Valdez won his 106-pound match by pinfall and Morgan was a pinfall winner at 152 followed by Miller’s win by pinfall in the 220-pound class.
Kuntz (126) and Farnsworth (138) had forfeit wins in their weight classes.
Eight double forfeits made Paonia’s match against Soroco a short exercise.
Paonia won bouts at 132, Connolly by pinfall with Fister (113), Gaston (182) and Deck (195) picking up forfeit wins. Soroco’s 12 points came on a pinfall over Booth at 170 and a forfeit win in the 160-pound class. Everything else was a double forfeit.
Paonia’s wrestling schedule for the week of Feb. 8 includes dual competition at home with Hotchkiss on Thursday, Feb. 11 beginning at 6 p.m. The Eagles will be in Rangely for competition against Norwood and Nucla beginning at 10 a.m.
