On Tuesday, June 11, the first ever James H. Thomas Memorial Scholarship - Outstanding Wrestler Award went to 2019 Hotchkiss High School graduate Sergio Campos.

Thomas passed away on March 15, 2019. He was born and raised in the Hotchkiss area and was a wrestler at Hotchkiss High School. He also represented HHS at the Colorado State Wrestling Tournament.

Thomas was also an avid football and basketball fan, but he was most passionate about wrestling.

Thomas lost both of his parents by the age of 10. He and his siblings were separated and sent to live with families in the area that were able to take in another child into their home.

Thomas had to grow up fast. He was an honest, hardworking individual of high moral character. Family was extremely important to him.

Thomas believed education was important, too, but he did not believe that a person had to go to college to receive an excellent education.

His family presented the award and $1,000 scholarship to Campos. The award is not based on grades and does not require the individual to go to college.

Thomas's family said, "What led the family to elect Sergio Campus as the recipient of this award is that we believe he embodies all that James (Jim) Thomas stood for."
