It didn’t take long for the North Fork High School girls basketball team to start cooking coming out of Christmas break.
The Miners took a 12-4 lead over Rangely after one quarter and cruised to a 38-25 victory. Although the offensive point total wasn’t high, North Fork held Rangely, previously 6-2, to its lowest point total of the season.
Leia Ellenberger led the Miners with 13 points and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. Peyton Carver also finished in double digits, scoring 11 points with a team-high two assists. Danielle Elder and Sidney Neff chipped in six points apiece. North Fork combined to commit only three turnovers during the contest.
Boys Basketball
Despite trailing by double digits at halftime, North Fork came roaring back in the second half, ultimately falling short during a 58-52 loss to Rangely.
Cursed with a slow start, the Miners trailed 15-7 after one quarter and 30-16 at the break. A strong, balanced scoring surge brought the game back within reach.
Dylan Prescott dropped in a game-high 16 points, while Zaid Vasquez and Henry Hollembeak each added nine points.
Both North Fork squads start on the road this weekend, beginning with Gunnison on Friday. The girls team tips at 5:30 p.m. with the boys scheduled for 7 p.m. Then, they’ll return home on Saturday to take on Roaring Fork, with the girls playing at 4 p.m. and the boys at 5:30 p.m.
