Support your local businesses on Small Business Saturday

By Hank Lohmeyer

Local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce this week will be participating in a nationwide promotional event sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Set for this coming Saturday, Nov. 26, the "Small Business Saturday" promotion is offering greatly expanded opportunities for retailers and their customers over the "shop local, shop small" promotions seen in the past.

According to local chamber officials, at least 20 businesses from Cedaredge to Eckert have agreed to participate in Small Business Saturday. There will be specials offered by participating businesses and lucky shoppers have the chance to win up to $100 in promotional "Cedaredge Bucks" to spend locally.

An added feature to this year's, "Day after Black Friday and Two Days Before Cyber Monday" retail promotion is the Pop Up Shop by local businesses that don't have a store front presence in the community. Some of these "web-only" entrepreneurs have arranged to display their products and promotional specials in local store fronts. The addition will ensure that people who come to town and check out their favorite retailers (as well as participating restaurants) are likely to find something wholly new and interesting offered by the visiting "Pop-Up" merchants.

Restaurants are offering "buy one-get one" specials and retailers are offering promotional gifts and various discounts to shoppers on that day. Check out the ad on C2 in this week's paper.

The chamber has also added a contest for holiday shoppers that could net one lucky winner up to $100 to spend at local business. Chamber officials explain that receipts of purchases of $20 or more can be brought to the chamber office by Thursday, Dec. 1, for entry in a drawing that will take place the following day. Prizes include a Cedaredge Bucks prize worth $100 at local merchants; a $50 Cedaredge Bucks prize; and two $25 Cedaredge Bucks prizes. Complete details are available at the chamber office on Main Street.

The idea of Small Business Saturday is one being promoted in smaller communities all across America on Nov. 26. Local businesses may participate in the national promotion just as small ag producing areas can participate in the highly visible national "Buy Fresh, Buy Local" promotion.

The Small Business Saturday promotion with its distinctive "Shop Small" logo is promoted and supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration. According to the agency's website, "Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 is Small Business Saturday® - a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities."
