Until recently the City of Delta had a Community Development Department. One of the primary functions of this department was to help contractors and homeowners through the process of applying for a building permit and fielding construction questions. Since the city no longer has a building inspector, it contracted with a company called SAFEbuilt, which reviews all documents and designs submitted as part of a request for a permit.
Previously, the director of Community Development would, on behalf of the applicant, submit the documentation to SAFEbuilt for review.
Now the functions of the Community Development Department have been reassigned to other city departments and SAFEbuilt. This could make the process of obtaining a building permit more frustrating and confusing. It may also take a bit more effort to get questions regarding construction answered.
At this point, the decision to terminate the Community Development Department is neither good nor bad. It is too early in the construction season to say. If you have recently done construction requiring a permit, it is in your best interest to contact the following members of the city council regarding your experience: Ron Austin, Chris Ryan, Gerald Roberts, Nathan Clay and Kevin Carlson. Doing so will allow the city to obtain objective data regarding its decision to close the Community Development Department.
