Too many gun owners don't respect life

Dear Editor:

The Orlando shooting was a terrible thing. We have had too many mass shootings and so many people are being killed in our country due to gun violence. We have killed more people in the U.S. in the last 50 years, due to gun violence, than all the military has lost in ALL the wars the U.S. has been involved in COMBINED.

In the week after the Orlando killings there were 207 deaths due to gun violence. I am a retired U.S. Marine. I was in Vietnam. I remember all of the peace demonstrations about the loss of life in that war. I have been to the Vietnam memorial in D.C. We lost 58,000 in that war. We kill double the number of people now in the U.S. due to gun violence than were killed in Vietnam (do the math). Where are the protests now? Where is the outrage? Where are our gutless lawmakers? I defended the U.S. Constitution for 21 years of my life. I support the right to own a gun for hunting, sport and defense (if you really think you need it). There are just too many guns in the hands of people who do not respect what they have in their hands, who do not respect human life.

Please don't turn this into a religious argument. So-called Christians have killed more people in the U.S. than have so-called Muslims. And yes, I know that people are behind the guns that are killing. But those people do have a gun they should not have. Do we, as a country, really want the NRA writing the bills on controlling gun violence? Our lawmakers should be doing that. That is why we vote for them. I ask again, where is the outrage? Where are the protests?
