Due to vandalism, the restroom facilities in Confluence Park have been closed pending repairs.
Wilma Erven, director of parks, recreation and golf for the City of Delta, estimates damages between $3,500 and $4,000. Fixtures were destroyed and electric hand dryers were damaged when they were jury-rigged to make them operate continuously in an effort to bump up the temperature. The temperature in the restrooms is normally maintained around 50°, Erven said.
Since the restrooms will require upgrades, the city is moving forward with a modified remodel of the CDOT-designated restroom near Fort Uncompahgre (pictured). Erven said Conservation Trust (lottery) funds are being used to redo the walls, paint, install new dividers and replace the fixtures that were destroyed.
"We had planned a total remodel of that restroom if the sales tax had passed," Erven said. "That did not happen as we all know, but the vandalism made it so that we had to do something. Unfortunately, having to use Conservation Trust funds cuts down on the amount of money we have to use for matching grants we might go for."
Erven said city crews are doing the repair work to cut down on the cost, so she isn't certain when the facilities will re-open. "We work a bit on them every day," she said.
Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call the Delta Police Department at 874-7676.
