In conjunction with Outdoor Heritage Day, Fort Uncompahgre is hosting an open house highlighting the upcoming summer camps for kids ages 8-12.
Eight sessions of the four-day summer camps are scheduled Monday-Thursday, June 10 to Aug. 2. Kids can sign up for one, two or all four. Each week campers will practice mountain biking, climbing, archery and standup paddleboards. They'll participate in arts and crafts, nature, science, life at the fort, fishing and outdoor games.
Weekly nature themes and field trips include:
June 10 -- Amazing Pollinators; North Fork of the Gunnison field trip.
June 17 -- River Ecology; North Fork of the Gunnison field trip.
June 24 -- Something Fishy; fish activities at the Hotchkiss hatchery.
July 1 -- Wet and Wild; three days of crazy activities.
July 8 -- Up Close with Elk and Moose; field trip to Grand Mesa National Forest.
July 15 -- Camping/Backpacking; two nights on the trail in the Big Blue Wilderness.
July 22 -- All About Birds; field trip to Black Canyon National Park.
July 29 -- Big Cats of Colorado; field trip to the forest.
The gear hub will be open, and there will be an opportunity to try tomahawk throwing and primitive archery. The open house runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
